The Forncett Reading Group

The Forncett Reading Group was formed in December 2007 following a plea for members in the Forncett Flyer. As a resident of Forncett, I had long wanted to join a reading group, but found that all those in the Wymondham/Long Stratton vicinity were either full or met at times inconvenient to myself. The Flyer notice brought forward sufficient book addicts and we met first to discuss our ‘way forward’.

We all agreed to meet monthly in the evenings at each others homes. We soon discovered that we all had a fondness for the odd glass of wine, so our monthly meetings have developed into a discussion of the book just read, a glass or two, and a longer chat about the world in general.

The books we have read have been extremely varied, this being a major reason for joining a reading group. We are all, I think, guilty of being comfortable with a style of reading and particular authors. The reading group has opened our eyes to different genres and broadened our combined reading outlook.

The library is very supportive of reading groups, and with sufficient notice will provide sets of books as requested. The only time that we have had to buy a book was when we agreed to read the Man Booker Prize winner for 2008, ‘The White Tiger’ by Avarind Adiga, as the book would not be available as a reading group set for at least six months from publishing. This was not a book that I would have rushed to read normally, but I thoroughly enjoyed learning about modern day India delivered humorously if somewhat cynically and being told of such apparent corruption that I was amazed.

Our current book (January 2009) is ‘Letters Between Six Sisters’ by Charlotte Mosley. This contains extracts from letters between the Mitford sisters covering a great deal of twentieth century social history. After this book has been discussed at the coming monthly meeting, one of our number will write a review for this web page and we will endeavour to continue this each month.
